Install and troubleshoot FL Studio
Numbered fixes for SmartScreen, Gatekeeper, ASIO latency, plugin scans, ARM Windows, and trial save limits. These are sequences on purpose.
- SmartScreen
- Gatekeeper
- ASIO
- Plugins
If the installer never launches, start with SmartScreen or Gatekeeper. If the app opens but you hear glitches, skip to ASIO. If a third-party plugin never appears, use the scan guide. Edition limits (no audio in Fruity) are not bugs. FAQ.
Guide 1
Windows SmartScreen blocks the installer
- Confirm the file size is about 1.03 GB for Windows 26.1.4.5589. A tiny executable is the wrong file.
- Right-click the installer, open Properties, and check Unblock if Windows marked it as coming from another computer.
- If SmartScreen appears, use More info, then Run anyway only when the filename and size match this site's build notes.
- If Smart App Control is set to Enforce, it may refuse unknown signers. Switch to Evaluation only if you understand the Windows setting, or wait until the signature has reputation.
- Do not disable antivirus globally. Add a one-file exclusion only if you already matched size and publisher.
Guide 2
macOS Gatekeeper holds FL Studio
- Use the 1.10 GB macOS 26.1.4.5356 installer, not a random disk image from a forum post.
- If macOS says the app cannot be opened, open System Settings, Privacy & Security, and allow the blocked app.
- Apple Silicon and Intel both run 26.1.4.5356. Rosetta is not a substitute for a missing ARM Windows build; this note is Mac only.
- After first launch, grant Microphone and Accessibility only if you actually record audio (Producer Edition and up).
Guide 3
Clicks, delay, or no sound (ASIO)
- Open Options, Audio settings. Select your interface ASIO driver, not a leftover Generic driver from another DAW if both fight for exclusive mode.
- Raise buffer size until the CPU meter is stable, then lower it only if monitoring latency hurts recording.
- Disable exclusive mode in Windows sound extras if FL Studio and a browser cannot share the device.
- On macOS, pick the interface in Audio settings and keep sample rate matched to the project (44.1 or 48 kHz).
- If you still have dropouts, freeze Kepler Exo or heavy send chains. That is a session load issue, not a failed install.
Guide 4
Plugin scan hangs or a VST never appears
- Let the first scan finish. Closing FL Studio mid-scan is a common reason the next launch looks empty.
- Add only the folder that actually contains 64-bit VST3 or VST2 files. Scanning an entire drive will stall.
- Rescan from the plugin manager after you verify the vendor installed 64-bit binaries.
- If a plugin crashes the scan, isolate it by moving that file out of the folder and scanning again.
- Edition limits still apply: Gross Beat is Signature Bundle and above. Harmor is All Plugins Edition.
Guide 5
Windows on ARM will not run 26.1.4
The published Windows requirement is Intel or AMD. Snapdragon Windows PCs are not a supported target for 26.1.4.5589. Use a machine with an Intel or AMD CPU, or use macOS 26.1.4.5356 on Apple Silicon if that is the computer you have.
Guide 6
Trial mode will not save the project
- Install 26.1.4 and confirm the app launches in trial if you have no key yet.
- Saving and some export options require a license for an edition.
- Lifetime Free Updates start after that purchase. They do not replace it.
- Enter the key from your Image-Line account in the app. This site does not sell keys.
Guide 7
Patterns versus playlist, for Live users
- Write a loop in the channel rack or piano roll. That loop is a pattern.
- Paint the pattern into the playlist as a clip. Arrange song structure there, not by duplicating every note in one giant pattern.
- Audio recordings (Producer Edition+) land as audio clips on playlist tracks.
- Automation Clips live on the playlist too. If a fade is missing, look for a clip, not only a mixer knob.
Antivirus flags on a DAW installer
Audio software writes drivers and hooks MIDI. Heuristic scanners sometimes mark that as packed or "generic". Match the 1.03 GB or 1.10 GB size and the product name before you trust a file. Never fetch FL Studio from a random mirror. Read Trust & Security.
